MR11

Brief history:

Conventionally, the MR11 bulb was a halogen lamp filled with a mixture of halogen and inert gas that gave the lamp superior longevity over other standard bulbs. By comparison, the MR11 provides compact and powerful lighting.

The “MR” in their name stands for “multifaceted reflector.” This refers to the angular facets surrounding the filament in conventional bulbs. These facets were covered by a highly reflective coating, providing powerful lighting and precise beam spread.

The “11” in “MR11” refers to the size of the bulb being 11/8 inches (35mm), with other common sizes including MR8, MR13, MR14, MR16, and MR18.

How they’re used:

MR11 bulbs see wide use in a variety of lighting applications. Many 12-volt fixtures have been designed to utilize MR11 bulbs with their distinctive two-pin bases. While they see some niche applications as diverse as bicycle headlights to slide projectors, they’re most frequently found in designer lighting fixtures that fall under several common uses such as track lighting, task/desk lighting, pendants, and landscape lighting.
